Why is Neuroscience important in Psychology?

Why is Neuroscience important in Psychology?

Psychology is the study of behavior and the mental processes which lead to behavior—thoughts, feelings and desires. Psychology observes these behaviors and processes indirectly. Neuroscience delves deeper into the human mind, observing biological and chemical processes in the brain and nervous system. Neuroscience makes it possible to look more directly, to see what’s going on inside our brains.

Psychology is crucial to studying, understanding and treating various mental illnesses. But neuroscience, offering the ability to see the brain’s inner-workings, to identify electrical and chemical changes relative to stimuli, offers mental health professionals an invaluable tool in formulating and also evaluating and amending treatment plans.

The two—neuroscience and psychology—can work hand-in-hand in helping to address unwanted behaviors and processes and develop healthier and more desirable patterns. For psychologists trying to understand, explain, and change unwanted behaviors, understanding the neurobiological and neuropharmacological background can be invaluable in treatment.

What is Neuroscience?

Neuroscience focuses on the brain and its impact on behavior and cognitive functions, or in other words, how we think. By recording brain waves and brain rhythms, neuroscience investigates what goes on within the nervous system when we have neurological, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Neuroscience offers neurofeedback and neuromodulation which can lead to the development of new neuropathways which bring healing … and hope.

Why is Studying Neuroscience Important?

A deeper understanding of the brain and improved methods of studying it aide in developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases and mental illnesses. Having the ability to observe biological and chemical workings within the brain works hand-in-hand with therapeutic treatment options. By identifying the brain waves and locations which are either over- and under-stimulated, neurofeedback can be used to help reduce or increase specific brain waves.

Neuroscience is another example of the unique treatment options available at Honey Lake Clinic which enable us to help clients address their health across all three spheres—spirit, mind and body—offering each client his or her greatest potential for wholeness and transformative growth.

What to Expect of the Neuroscience Track at Honey Lake Clinic

Should you choose to take advantage of our Neuroscience tract at Honey Lake Clinic, you will begin with an initial consultation with and evaluation by Dr. J. Lucas Koberda, MD, PhD, our board-certified Neurologist.

Brain mapping—a non-invasive evaluation—takes about a half-an-hour. Afterwards, you will discuss various therapy options complimentary to the findings. Once those therapies are underway, you will be able to revisit the results—actually see the progress you are making—and adjust as needed.

Your ability at Honey Lake Clinic to incorporate a wide variety of therapeutic programs and options into your care is truly unique. The neuroscience track, in chorus with other forms of therapy—Equine-Assisted, EMDR, Art therapy, Massage, for instance—not to mention the many and varied relaxing on-site amenities you will enjoy here—all work together to heal.

At Honey Lake, we’re committed to providing you with compassionate care and the practical equipping necessary to significantly improve the condition which brought you to our program.
