Mental health treatment at Honey Lake Clinic is never one-size-fits-all—every patient in our care is unique, and offering individualized care is at the heart of what we do. For adolescent girls 15 and up and adults who have not found relief from traditional treatments for depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) offers a non-invasive and highly effective alternative. This innovative treatment uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain associated with mood regulation, resulting in improved symptoms that can last for months or even years.
Incorporating TMS into our mental health programs is just one way that we’re bringing the latest in evidence-based treatments to our patients. We take an approach to treatment that’s both clinically sound and Christ-centered, offering hope and healing for those struggling with mental health conditions like anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How TMS Works
TMS uses a magnetic device to deliver short pulses of magnetic energy to specific areas of the brain that are involved in mood regulation. The treatment is painless and non-invasive, with no impact on cognitive function or memory.
The goal of a TMS program is to stimulate those areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression or other mental health conditions. When these areas are stimulated, they can begin to function more normally, resulting in improved mood and symptoms.
TMS is typically administered five days a week for four to six weeks, with each session lasting around 20-30 minutes. Some patients may need maintenance treatments every few months to maintain their results.
Do You Offer TMS for Adolescent Patients?
Yes—patients ages 15 and up can receive TMS. NeuroStar®, the TMS device used at Honey Lake Clinic, is the first device cleared by the FDA for use on teens.
In teens ages 15 and up, TMS has been found to reduce the symptoms of depression by 78%, and in 48% of patients, it leads to a remission in depression symptoms.
Aetna has recently announced expanded coverage for TMS that includes adolescents ages 15 and up. If you have questions about insurance coverage, we’re here to help.
Is TMS a Replacement for Talk Therapy or Medication?
The short answer is no—while TMS can be highly effective in treating mental health conditions, it’s not meant to replace other types of treatment. Instead, it compliments them. If you’re struggling with depression, for example, it can be difficult to focus on talk therapy. You might not have the energy or motivation to participate fully. TMS can help lift that fog of depression, allowing you to engage more fully in talk therapy and make progress.
For some patients, TMS may also reduce the need for medication, while for others, it may enhance the effects of medication. Our team will work with you to determine the best approach based on your unique needs and goals.
Benefits of TMS
Why do we offer TMS at Honey Lake Clinic? Because we’ve seen firsthand the incredible benefits it can provide for our patients, including:
- Highly effective – Studies have shown that TMS can be highly effective in treating depression and other mental health conditions, often when other treatments have failed.
- Non-invasive – Unlike electroconvulsive (ECT) therapy, TMS does not involve anesthesia or cause seizures. It’s a gentler option that doesn’t require hospitalization or downtime.
- Safe – TMS is FDA-approved and has few side effects, which are typically mild and short-lived, such as headache or scalp discomfort.
- Long-lasting – Many patients experience improvements in symptoms for months or even years after completing TMS. Some may need occasional maintenance treatments to sustain their results.
With its high success rate and minimal side effects, TMS is an attractive option for many of our patients struggling with treatment-resistant mental health conditions.
