How Art Therapy Can Help You Reclaim Your Story

Art therapy is offered at Honey Lake Clinic in correlation with other forms of treatment and education, offering patients tremendous insights into their thoughts, expressions, and experiences. Art therapy can be a very effective tool in helping clients move past emotional obstacles and barriers.

Individuals who participate in our art therapy program do so under the supervision of registered art therapist and licensed Christian counselor Candace Guillory. Candace received her master’s in art therapy at Florida State University and is a licensed Christian counselor. She brings a wealth of diverse experience in her field—having worked with clients in hospitals, prisons, juvenile facilities, and rehabs—treating substance abuse, mental health, and mood disorders.

“There are many different approaches and modalities within the field of art therapy. At Honey Lake Clinic, we offer an eclectic program, utilizing art in chorus with other treatments and therapies our clients are taking advantage of as part of their overall healing process.”

What Is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a creative therapeutic technique that originated in the fields of art and psychotherapy. It primarily aims to help individuals experiencing emotional and psychological challenges to achieve personal well-being.

Whether engaging the creative process in creating pieces of art as therapy or in employing third-party artwork, art therapy has proven to be effective in helping people:

  • Develop self-awareness
  • Explore emotions
  • Address unresolved emotional conflicts
  • Improve social skills
  • Raise self-esteem

Art therapy can even improve communication and concentration and can help reduce feelings of isolation.

What to Expect in Art Therapy Sessions

Because art therapy allows people to express feelings on any subject through a creative medium rather than with speech, it is particularly helpful for people who feel out of touch with their emotions or feelings. Often, individuals experiencing difficulty discussing or remembering painful experiences find art therapy especially beneficial.

“I was able to creatively express myself and to put my thoughts down. It was freeing. And I found the activities we did relaxing and soothing. Art therapy offers me a safe space and a safe medium in which to process things.”

– Kelly R., Ft. Lauderdale, FL

At Honey Lake Clinic, we focus on intertwining art therapy with core concepts taken from Dr. Benzio’s SPEARS model. This means that we are able to offer an art therapy program that connects with the rest of what patients are receiving during their treatment, addressing the needs of their bio-psycho-social-spiritual health throughout their stay.

We recognize the powerful effect that the creative process can have on our clients. Our therapists bring together psychological, spiritual, and artistic elements as part of a holistic therapeutic approach, encompassing mind, body, and spirit in healing and recovery.

Creative outlets used in therapy at Honey Lake Clinic may include:

  • Painting
  • Finger painting
  • Doodling
  • Scribbling
  • Sculpting
  • Drawing
  • Using molding clay
  • Carving
  • Making pottery
  • Making cards
  • Using textiles
  • Making collages

Neither previous art experience nor natural artistic ability is necessary for successful art therapy treatment. Most individuals who choose to utilize art therapy find it not only helpful but also enjoyable—some even continue to include art and creativity as an outlet after they’ve completed treatment.

“The art therapy stretches me because I’m not a natural artist. But, it’s more helpful than I’d imagined in gaining insights from the activities we do.”

–  Russ T., Marietta, GA
