Art therapy can be a very effective tool in helping clients move past emotional obstacles and barriers.

At Honey Lake, art therapy can become part of a client’s overall treatment plan if they’re interested in art, or if in working with their therapists and doctors it is determined it can be particularly helpful. The program is designed to cater to each participating client, addressing their specific needs.

Clients who participate in our art therapy program do so under the supervision of Registered Art Therapist and Licensed Christian Counselor Candace Guillory.

“There are many different approaches and modalities within the field of Art Therapy. At Honey Lake Clinic we offer an eclectic program, utilizing art in chorus with other treatments and therapies our clients are taking advantage of as part of their overall healing process.”

What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a creative therapeutic technique that originated in the fields of art and psychotherapy which primarily aims to help individuals experiencing emotional and psychological challenges to achieve personal well-being and improved levels of function.

Whether engaging the creative process in creating pieces of art as therapy or in employing third-party artwork, art therapy has proven to be effective in helping people develop self-awareness, explore emotions, address unresolved emotional conflicts, improve social skills, and raise self-esteem. Research indicates art therapy can improve communication and concentration and can help reduce feelings of isolation.

Positive results in art therapy may often be achieved by those facing issues such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Substance dependency
  • Stress
  • Posttraumatic stress
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity
  • Anorexia
  • Bulimia
  • Other eating disorders
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Family or relationship issues

How Does it Work?

Because art therapy allows people to express feelings on any subject through a creative medium rather than with speech, it is particularly helpful for people who feel out of touch with their emotions or feelings. Often, individuals experiencing difficulty discussing or remembering painful experiences find art therapy especially beneficial.

“I was able to creatively express myself and to put my thoughts down. It was freeing. And I found the activities we did are relaxing and soothing. Art therapy offers me a safe space and a safe medium in which to process things.”

At Honey Lake Clinic, we focus on intertwining art therapy with core concepts taken from Dr. Benzio’s SPEARS model, and on offering an art therapy program which connects with the rest of what clients are receiving during their treatment, addressing the needs of their bio-psycho-social-spiritual health throughout their stay.

Art Therapy’s Techniques and Elements

We recognize the powerful effect that the creative process can have on our clients. At Honey Lake, our therapists bring together psychological, spiritual and artistic elements as part of a holistic therapeutic approach, encompassing mind, body and spirit in healing and recovery.

Neither previous art experience or natural artistic ability is necessary for successful art therapy treatment. Most clients who choose to utilize art therapy find it not only helpful, but also enjoyable—some even continue to include art and creativity as an outlet after they’ve completed treatment.

“The Art Therapy stretches me because I’m not a natural artist. But, it’s more helpful than I’d imagined in gaining insights from the activities we do.”

–Russ T., Marietta, GA
