What Is Depersonalization Disorder?
Depersonalization disorder causes a person to feel disconnected from their own thoughts, emotions, and body—as though they are observing life from outside themselves. These episodes may last for moments or stretch into months, often triggered by trauma, stress, or anxiety.
Common symptoms include:
- A feeling of watching yourself from outside your body
- Emotional or physical numbness
- Feeling robotic, hollow, or “not real”
- Difficulty connecting with your memories, identity, or actions
- Fear of losing your mind or disappearing completely
This experience can be terrifying—but it is a symptom, not your identity. Depersonalization is the brain’s way of coping with emotional overload. With the right treatment, healing is absolutely possible.
What Is Derealization Disorder?
Derealization disorder involves feeling that the world around you isn’t real. Familiar places may seem distant, distorted, or artificial. People often describe it as living in a dream or behind glass—aware of their surroundings, but unable to connect to them.
Common symptoms include
- Perceiving the world as foggy, blurry, or dreamlike
- Feeling detached from people or environments
- A sense of unreality or “movie-like” perception
- Time distortion—feeling like events are too fast or too slow
- Trouble connecting emotionally to surroundings
While it may feel frightening or isolating, derealization is also a form of dissociation. You are not going crazy—your mind is trying to protect you. At Honey Lake Clinic, we help bring you back to the safety of the present moment.

When You Feel Disconnected from
Yourself or Life—You’re Not Alone
When You Feel Disconnected from Yourself or Life—You’re Not Alone
For many adults, symptoms of depersonalization or derealization begin in response to trauma, chronic stress, or panic attacks. Some people function outwardly while quietly enduring feelings of emptiness, disconnection, or fear of losing control.
These disorders can make it hard to work, connect with loved ones, attend church, or even pray. You may know that your thoughts and experiences aren’t dangerous—but they still feel terrifying. And over time, the desire to escape or withdraw can grow.
At Honey Lake Clinic, we walk alongside you to rebuild a sense of safety, purpose, and identity—rooted in both clinical care and God’s truth.

Getting help is really brave, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
I had reached a point where I saw no hope—no reason to live. I didn’t believe healing was possible for me. But at Honey Lake Clinic, I found a place where people truly understood both faith and mental health. The peaceful environment, the support, and the care I received made all the difference. I was wrong to think nothing could help me. Honey Lake Clinic did.
