Types of Treatment Programs

Substance abuse and addiction treatment is typically offered in several general types or modalities. No matter the type, every program starts with detoxification.

Detoxification is the process by which your body clears itself of drugs. Depending on a number of factors—the type of substance being abused, length of abuse, etc.—detox can be an arduous process, with potentially dangerous physiological symptoms and side effects.

Because withdrawal from certain substances can produce very unpleasant and potentially fatal side effects, detoxification is often managed with medications administered by a physician in an inpatient or outpatient setting, referred to as medically managed withdrawal. Medications are available to assist in the withdrawal from opioids, benzodiazepines, alcohol, nicotine, barbiturates, and other sedatives.

It is vitally important to recognize that detox is only a first step. Detoxification alone doesn’t address the psychological, social and behavioral problems associated with substance abuse and addiction. Detox, in and of itself, doesn’t bring lasting recovery. It needs to be part—that first step—of your overall treatment program.

What type of drug treatment program is right for you? Here are five of the most common substance abuse treatment programs to consider:

Long-Term Residential Treatment

Long-term residential treatment provides around-the-clock care and oversight, generally in a non-hospital, therapeutic community setting. Programs can last between 6 and 12 months, and focus on your resocialization and use the program’s entire community—including other residents, staff, and the social context—as active components of your treatment. This type of treatment is highly structured, with activities designed to help you examine unhealthy thoughts, self-concepts, and destructive patterns of behavior and adopt new, healthier and more harmonious ways to interact with others.

Short-Term Residential Treatment

Short-term residential programs provide intensive but relatively brief treatment. These programs typically offer a 3- to 6-week inpatient treatment phase followed by extended outpatient therapy and participation in a self-help group. Following stays in residential treatment programs, you’ll be encouraged to remain engaged in outpatient and/or aftercare programs to reduce the risk of relapse once you leave the residential setting.

Outpatient Treatment Programs

Outpatient treatment varies in the types and intensity of services offered, cost far less than inpatient treatment, and present less of a life-interruption. But you should beware—many low-intensity outpatient programs offer little more than drug education. Some outpatient programs do offer a wider range of effective services. Again, the decision which type of treatment program is right for you will depend on many factors, and should be considered with the help of a medical, mental health, and/or substance abuse professional.

Individualized Counseling

Individualized counseling focuses on stopping substance abuse while addressing related areas such as life, career, relationship, and legal concerns.

Group Counseling

Another type of program uses group therapy, specifically the social reinforcement offered by peer discussion, to help promote drug-free living. Research shows that group therapy in conjunction with individualized drug counseling or out-patient treatment increases effectiveness.
