Have you or has someone you love been down the 12-step rehab path and continued to struggle? Honey Lake Clinic’s Non 12 Step Rehab can help.
The most well-known of the 12-step programs is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), essentially a support group for people in recovery from alcoholism. AA (and similar 12-step programs) help individuals connect with others who also struggle, forming a network of peers working together and offering support to one another towards a shared goal—sobriety.
AA and other 12-step programs ask members to begin by admitting their lack of control over alcohol. In order to recover, individuals are urged to consider a higher power and find a spiritual awakening. While not based on a specific religion or faith perspective, 12-Step models like AA do have religious and/or spiritual undertones.
In simplest form, the AA model follows a pattern: a recovered alcoholic shares the story of his or her own problem drinking, describes the sobriety he or she has found in AA, and invites others to join the informal fellowship.
The heart of the program of personal recovery is contained in Twelve Steps describing the experience of the earliest members of the Society. They are:
People who are new to AA are not asked to accept or follow these Twelve Steps in their entirety if they feel unwilling or unable to do so. They are asked to keep an open mind, attend meetings and read AA literature, in hopes they will find encouragement in their own substance struggles.
By design, the spiritual aspects and the higher power in AA’s (and other 12-step program’s) formula are not defined beyond “God as we understand Him.”
While many rehab programs offer faith-based or spiritual content as an aside, a truly Christian recovery program recognizes Jesus Christ, the Wonderful Counselor and Great Physician, as the foundation of the healing process. At Honey Lake Clinic, we don’t talk about a distant deity or nebulous higher power. We look directly to life’s source, Creator, Sustainer and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, within our non 12 step rehab program.
Based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) developed in the 1930s, the 12-step approach to recovery has since become a classic model for support groups and has been integrated into many addiction treatment programs.
While traditional 12-step rehab models work for many people, they are not the best path for everyone. A non 12-step program might be best for you.

"God reached into the abyss-the darkness I was in at the depth of my addiction-and showed me that He is real, and that He is there. I'd tried so many programs. In the end, it wasn't a program that was my breakthrough, it was God's love." —Sean, Eufaula, AL
"I am a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. I started drinking at the age of 12 because I couldn't cope with social situations. I was using by 14. I was on the streets for the better part of my teenage and young adult life. I prostituted myself for my next bag of dope. I burned down every healthy relationship in my life. I came to Honey Lake Clinic as my last resort-suicide was next. I'm nineteen months sober. More that that, I'm looking forward to tomorrow ... and a lifetime of tomorrows." —Lori, Tyngsboro, MA
"Honey Lake Clinic has given me the ability to sit back and think about who God really says I am." —Olu, Tampa, FL
At Honey Lake Clinic, we recognize that every addiction is different and substances are different—alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription medications, and etc. This is why our non 12 step rehab is tailored to meet his or her specific addiction and needs.
It is very important to realize that substance use and addiction don’t just occur in a vacuum. Abuse often begins as an attempt to self-medicate a deeper hurt. For real healing and recovery, the underlying causes of substance abuse must be addressed. To get at this underlying hurt and bring lasting healing takes a holistic—spirit, mind and body—approach to addiction diagnosis, management and treatment.

Each adolescent patient at Honey Lake Clinic follows a course of treatment developed specifically for her needs. Charity Schramm, LHMC, MCAP, the Clinical Director of Honey Lake Clinic’s Adolescent Program explains:
“What we do here in our non 12 step rehab for is similar to what we do in the adult program at Honey Lake Clinic, but tailored to the very specific needs of girls between the ages of 13 and 17. Of course there is a strong educational component because these girls come to us while they are students in school, but the holistic approach is the same—our goal is to help girls grow spiritually, emotionally and physically.”
