The Adolescent Program at Hazel House and the Honey Lake Difference Each adolescent patient at Honey Lake Clinic follows a course of treatment developed specifically for her needs. Elena Reyes-Runyon, LHMC, Director of Honey Lake Clinic’s Adolescent Program at Hazel House explains:

What we do here in the adolescent program at Hazel House is similar to what we do in the adult program at Honey Lake Clinic but tailored to the very specific needs of girls between the ages of 13 and 17. We are a holistic program which means we will meet your teenager’s needs mentally, behaviorally, spiritually, and academically. We are here to help your teen pull all those things together.

Therapy Approaches and Modalities

As with Honey Lake Clinic’s adult program, our Adolescent Program at Hazel’s House utilizes traditional therapy approaches and modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and employs many complimentary modalities such as Equine-Assisted Therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Fisher Wallace Stimulator (FWS), to name a few.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

The Adolescent Program at Hazel House is a 30-day minimum stay program however we’ve found that for most girls, 90-days is really an optimal stay.

The Hazel House Difference

Honey Lake Clinic’s Adolescent Program At Hazel House

An Emphasis on Education

There is a strong educational component in our adolescent program because girls come to us while they are students in school. Our Educational Coordinator specializes in alternative educational settings. She puts her vast experience into making sure each of our adolescent patients get the most out of every educational opportunity while they are here, beginning at intake and admission, and carrying through each patient’s entire stay. Our staff also includes other exceptional educators, experienced paraprofessionals, and tutors, who work directly with the patients, relative to each girl’s individual needs.

As a part of the admission process, parents request an official sealed transcript from their daughter’s school of record. These records help us tailor the education program to each girl’s specific needs.

What is Included?

  • Courses through Liberty University Online Academy
  • Individualized Instruction
  • Tutoring & Specialized Instruction
  • Non-typical, Self-Contained Classroom

Our education program at Hazel House runs year-round. Yes, the education program continues through the summertime. For those students who’ve fallen behind—which is very common among students in treatment, this is an ideal window in which to pick up skills they’d missed. For those students who are not behind, this is an excellent opportunity to further refine and hone their skills.

An Emphasis on Family

Mental and behavioral health issues affect the entire household. With stronger relationships at home and family support, your daughter (and your family) will be on a better path to healing. At Hazel House, we include family in the healing process, utilizing weekly family teletherapy sessions to bring patients together with their parents and loved ones for sessions with marriage and family therapists.

Many parents need assistance in establishing healthy boundaries and incorporating a behavioral system at home. Our family therapists can help patients and their parents come up with behavioral contracts to guide the entire family in following through with a meaningful behavioral plan. We believe in quality family time. As COVID restrictions lift, we plan to resume having family visitation and implement family workshops to educate families and help prepare for the transition as patients return home.

A Home and a Close-Knit, Healing Community

Adolescent program patients reside in Hazel’s House, a magnificent 7,000 square-foot, open floorplan home, with an inviting horseshoe-shaped infinity swimming pool, surrounded by 3,200 square feet of deck, patios and porches, all overlooking a private 80-acre, spring-fed lake. The property offers girls a wide variety of outdoor activities, including swimming, sunning, basketball, volleyball, biking, hiking, horses, and much more.

Girls quickly discover that the environment at Hazel House is most supportive and encouraging. At Hazel House, your doctor, therapist, staff, interns, and even your fellow patients are like family—we’re all here for one reason, healing!
