Exercise: A Cure For Depression?

Exercise: A Cure For Depression?

Is Exercise A Cure for Depression?
Many studies will tell you that exercise can directly improve overall mental health. But how does it help? Will it affect me? How do I get started? These are pretty common thoughts, and chances are if you are reading this you or someone you know are one of ten Americans suffering from depression.

This is partly because…
Society is taking a role into a less active and healthy lifestyle.
Some examples include:

  • Playing sports games on the television instead of outside.
  • Being able to rent movies online through streaming services instead of taking a trip to blockbuster.
  • The workforce increasingly moving to jobs on the computer.

How Does Exercise Cure Depression?

Curing Depression
Even just starting at 5 minutes a day can help cure your depression by

  • Keeping a healthy heart
  • Building a resistance to Diabetes.
  • Lowering your blood pressure.
  • Improving sleep.
  • Releasing “feel-good” chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine.
  • Improving confidence as you reach self-set goals and focus on improving yourself.
  • Increasing nerve cell growth in the hippocampus which improves nerve connections and helps relieve and cure depression.

However, deciding to work out and making it a habit are two different things. At Honey Lake Clinic we believe in teaching and applying decision-making as well as decision-management in our curriculum.
