What Causes Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Seasonal affective disorder is believed to be linked to changes in circadian rhythms and the body’s production of melatonin. When there is less exposure to natural light, the body may produce more melatonin, which can lead to feelings of fatigue and low mood.

Genetics, age, and existing mental health conditions may also play a role in the development of SAD. It can develop in individuals of any age, but it is more common in young adults and women.

Signs and Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression, and as such, shares many symptoms with other types of depression. However, there are some unique signs to watch out for that may indicate SAD:

  • Feeling sad or hopeless during the fall and winter months, but feeling normal during the spring and summer
  • Difficulty waking up in the morning and feeling excessively tired throughout the day
  • Changes in appetite, particularly craving carbohydrates
  • Withdrawal from social interactions or hobbies

If you experience these symptoms consistently during certain times of year, talking to a mental health professional can help you determine if you have SAD and develop a treatment plan.

Treatment Options for Seasonal Affective Disorder

There are several effective treatments for seasonal affective disorder. These may include:

  • Light therapy – This involves sitting in front of a special light box that mimics natural outdoor light, which can help improve mood and reduce symptoms.
  • Medication – Antidepressants may be prescribed to manage symptoms of SAD, particularly during the fall and winter months.
  • Psychotherapy – A wide variety of therapies can be helpful for managing SAD, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.
  • TMS therapy – Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation.

In addition to these treatment options, incorporating faith and spirituality can be beneficial for individuals with seasonal affective disorder. At Honey Lake Clinic, we understand the importance of addressing all aspects of a person’s being—body, mind, and spirit—for lasting recovery from mental health conditions.

Getting away from the stress and demands of everyday life can also be helpful for individuals with SAD.
